Heavy & Oversized Packing Spec

Heavy-duty boxes, cross-sealing, edge protectors, handling marks and rollers.

Heavy and oversized parcels risk box failure, bottom blow-out and lifting injuries. Focus on heavy-duty boxes, cross-sealing, edge protectors and clear handling marks.

Standard steps

  1. Heavy-duty boxEnough corrugate flutes; no damaged or damp cartons.
  2. Reinforce the baseCross / multiple tape strips on the bottom; staples if needed.
  3. Distribute weightCentre of mass low and central — never top-heavy.
  4. Edge protectorsRigid corners prevent punctures.
  5. SealCross method, tape overhanging the edges.
  6. Handling marksMark weight, this-way-up and two-person/mechanical lift.

Don’ts

  • Thin, damp or damaged cartons for heavy goods;
  • A single central strip on the bottom;
  • Overweight goods in a normal box without reinforcement.
Practical tip

Above ~14kg, slide on rollers between surfaces rather than lift; above ~23kg consider lift assistance to cut injury and hidden cost.

Price & estimate note

Equipment prices are indicative Australian retail bands in AUD for 2026. They vary by brand, retailer, promotion and over time, and exclude GST, freight and installation; the invoice at purchase prevails. “Seconds saved” are ranges from published warehouse-operations material — estimates, not guarantees. Time your own process with a stopwatch first. See Sources & method.

Sealing and sealers are in tape guns & sealers; heavy-duty boxes in boxes & mailers.
