Glossary
Common packing and warehouse terms (CN/EN).
DIM weight
The chargeable weight based on package size rather than actual weight. Bigger boxes with more void can cost more — cutting “air freight” saves money.
Void / fill rate
The share of box space not occupied by the product. Higher void means wasted materials and freight, and more risk of in-transit damage.
H-method sealing
One central tape strip plus a strip across each end, forming an H. Standard for medium-weight goods; use a cross method for heavy items.
Double-boxing
The fragile item is first wrapped in its own inner box, then suspended with ~5cm of cushioning inside an outer box. Recommended for glass and ceramics.
Wave picking/packing
Grouping orders by time window, carrier or box size and processing them together to co-ordinate materials and labour.
Batch by task
Repeat one step across the whole batch — wrap all, box all, seal/label all — to reduce tool switching and re-deciding.
Reach zone
Roughly 60cm (24 inches) around the body — the fastest pick-and-place area. Beyond it you must reach or walk.
5S
Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain — a lean station method that can lift capacity or speed by ~10–25% with no capital spend.
Thermal printer
An ink-free printer that images labels by heat; shipping labels peel and stick directly — the standard e-commerce device.
Shake test
After sealing, shake the box near your ear. If anything moves or rattles, cushioning is insufficient — repack it.
